Frequently asked questions

What is video schema markup?

It’s structured data using the schema.org VideoObject type that tells search engines a video’s title, thumbnail, upload date, length and where to play it.

Which VideoObject fields are required?

Google requires name, thumbnailUrl and uploadDate. Adding description, duration and a contentUrl or embedUrl is recommended — see Google’s video structured data documentation.

Where do I put the JSON-LD?

Paste it into the <head> of the page where the video actually plays, then validate it with Google’s Rich Results Test.

Does video schema guarantee rich results?

No. It makes the page eligible for video features; Google decides whether to show them.

What format does duration use?

ISO 8601 — three minutes and thirty seconds is PT3M30S. The generator converts mm:ss for you.
