Which engagement rate formula to use

All three formulas start with the same top line: likes + comments + shares + saves. What changes is what you divide by.

Formula

By followers
Follower count
Quick checks, including other accounts: followers are public, so you can compare yourself with competitors.
Not everyone who follows you sees every post, and posts also reach people who don’t follow you. Big accounts tend to look worse than they are, and a post that spreads beyond your followers can look better than it is.
By reach
Unique people who saw the post (Viewers on Instagram, Reach on Facebook)
Judging your own posts. It asks: of the people who actually saw this, how many reacted? That’s fairer for large and small accounts alike.
Only you can see reach in your insights, so you can’t calculate it for other accounts.
By views
Total views (the same person can count more than once)
Video and reels, where views are the headline number.
Views count repeat viewing, so this rate is always lower than the rate by reach. Don’t compare it with a rate by reach or by followers.

Whichever you pick, use the same formula and the same top line every time. A rate is only useful compared with your own past posts or with numbers calculated the same way.

Where to find the numbers

Platforms rename their metrics often. If a name below doesn’t match what you see, tap the info icon next to the metric for its current definition.

Instagram

Insights are available for public accounts. Open a post or reel and tap View insights; for a story, open it and swipe up. According to Instagram Help, you’ll find:

  • Views: how many times your content was played or displayed, repeat views included.

  • Viewers: unique accounts that saw the content at least once. Use it as reach.

  • Interactions: likes, comments, saves and shares.

  • Accounts engaged: unique accounts that interacted.

Your follower count is on your profile.

TikTok

Open your profile, tap the menu, go to TikTok Studio and then Analytics; on a computer, open the Analytics tab in TikTok Studio. According to the TikTok Creator Academy:

  • Overview shows post views, profile views, likes, comments and shares for the period you pick.

  • Viewers shows unique viewers and returning viewers. Use unique viewers as reach.

  • Tap a single video for its own numbers.

Facebook

Open Insights in Meta Business Suite or the Professional Dashboard. Meta has made Views the main metric for reels, videos, posts and stories:

  • Views: plays for reels and videos; for photo and text posts and stories, the number of times they appeared on screen, repeat views included. It replaced impressions.

  • Reach: unique people who saw the post.

  • Reactions, comments and shares: the top line of your formula.

Your follower count is on your Page.

How to calculate engagement rate

  1. Open the post’s stats

Find its likes, comments, shares and saves in Insights or Analytics.

  2. Add your followers

Or the people the post reached, if you’d rather see how those who saw it reacted.

  3. Compare over time

Check your posts the same way every month to see what content works.
