Why the WhatsApp link opens the wrong chat or doesn’t work

The link opens a chat with a different number, or says the number isn’t on WhatsApp

Use the full number in international format: country code first, then the number. WhatsApp’s click to chat guide says to leave out any zeros, brackets and dashes. For a UK mobile 07700 900123 that’s 447700900123: country code 44, the leading 0 dropped.

The link doesn’t open at all

Remove the + and any 00 in front of the country code, plus spaces, dashes, dots and brackets. WhatsApp shows https://wa.me/1XXXXXXXXXX as the right form and https://wa.me/+001-(XXX)XXXXXXX as the wrong one.

The chat opens, but nobody can message you

The number must have an active WhatsApp account. If you run WhatsApp Business on a separate number, link to that one, not your personal number.

The pre-filled message is cut off or looks broken

The message must be URL-encoded: a space becomes %20, a line break %0A, & becomes %26. An unencoded & or # ends the message early. This generator encodes the text for you, so copy the finished link instead of editing it by hand.

The email link ignores the subject or the text

In a mailto: link, write spaces as %20, not +: a + can be read as a real plus sign. Line breaks are %0D%0A. Only the first extra field starts with ?, the rest are joined with &: mailto:hi@example.com?subject=Order&body=Hello.

Cc or Bcc doesn’t show up in the email

Mail apps are only expected to understand the subject and the body, so some may ignore cc and bcc. Don’t rely on them for anything important, and separate several addresses with a comma.

The text message link opens without the text, or with the wrong recipient

Use one number in international format and ?body= for the text, for example sms:+15551234567?body=Hello%20there. Links with several recipients behave differently on iPhone and Android, so test them on both or stick to one number.

The call link doesn’t dial on some phones

Start with + and the country code, as in tel:+15551234567. Dashes, dots and brackets are allowed as separators, but spaces aren’t.

Nothing happens when you click the link on a computer

mailto:, sms: and tel: links open whatever app the device uses for email, texts or calls. On a computer without one set up, the click may do nothing. That’s the device, not the link: test it on a phone.

How to add a contact link

  1. Choose the link type

Email, call, text message or WhatsApp.

  2. Fill in the details

Add a subject or message so customers don’t start from a blank screen.

  3. Use it

Paste the link where your site builder asks for one, or the HTML link into your page.
