Google Search Central: structured data features ↗

Which structured data still gets a rich result in Google

Correct markup makes a page eligible for a rich result. It doesn’t guarantee one: Google decides per search. And the list of supported types gets shorter over time. Here’s where each type stands today.

Markup Google no longer uses doesn’t hurt your page. It just has no visible effect in Google Search.

Which type to choose

  • You have a shop, office or service area customers can visit or call: use a LocalBusiness subtype (for example Restaurant or Dentist) rather than this generator’s Organization. Google asks for the most specific type that fits.

  • You’re a company without a public location, like an online store or SaaS: Organization on the home page or About page, with your logo and social profiles in sameAs.

  • A page sells or reviews one product: Product with offers (price and currency), plus ratings if real customers left them on that page.

  • A page announces an event at a venue: Event with the start date and the venue’s address. Skip it for webinars and other online-only events.

  • A blog post or news story: Article (or BlogPosting / NewsArticle) with headline, image, dates and author.

  • A page built around one video: VideoObject with name, thumbnail and upload date.

  • Any page deeper than the home page: BreadcrumbList that matches the breadcrumb links visible on the page.

  • A page about one service you offer: Service with the service type, provider and area served. If you’re a local business, add your LocalBusiness as the provider.

  • A team member or author page: Person.

  • Your home page: WebSite with your site name, usually together with Organization.

One page can describe several things. Put them in one @graph and link them with @id, for example an Article whose publisher is your Organization. Only mark up what visitors can actually see on that page.

How to add schema markup to your site

  1. Pick the type

Choose what the page is about: your organization, a product, an article, an event, a person or the website.

  2. Fill in the details

Only filled-in fields go into the code, so leave out what you don’t have.

  3. Add the code

Paste it into the page’s <head> or anywhere in the body.

  4. Test it

Check the page with Google’s Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator.
