When review stars can show in Google and when they can’t

Stars under a result come from Review or AggregateRating markup. Google shows them only when the markup follows its review snippet rules, and even then they aren’t guaranteed.

Stars can show for

These types and their subtypes: Book, Course, CreativeWorkSeason, CreativeWorkSeries, Episode, Event, Game, HowTo, LocalBusiness, MediaObject, Movie, MusicPlaylist, MusicRecording, Organization, Product, Recipe, SoftwareApplication. A product page with ratings from your customers, a recipe rated by readers or a review site rating local restaurants all qualify.

No stars for reviews of your own business

If a business or organization collects reviews about itself and marks them up on its own site, Google calls them self-serving and won’t show stars. That applies to LocalBusiness and Organization markup, including reviews shown through an embedded third-party widget. It’s not a penalty: there’s no manual action, and you don’t have to remove the markup. Your Business Profile reviews aren’t affected.

What an aggregate rating needs

  • ratingValue: the average score.

  • ratingCount or reviewCount: how many ratings or reviews it’s based on.

  • The item being rated, either as itemReviewed or by nesting the rating inside the item’s markup.

  • bestRating and worstRating if you don’t use a 1 to 5 scale. Use a dot for decimals: 4.6.

Rules that remove stars

  • Reviews in the markup must be visible on the page.

  • Rate one specific item, not a category or a list.

  • Don’t copy ratings from other websites into your markup.

  • No fake reviews, and no reviews written for a reward unless that’s clearly disclosed.

  • Each review needs a real author name, under 100 characters.

How to add review schema

  1. Pick the item

Choose what is reviewed and enter its name.

  2. Add the rating

Use the average and count of real reviews shown on the page, or a single review.

  3. Paste and test

Add the code to the item’s page and check it with Google’s Rich Results Test.
